IFFM 2019: Gully Boy, Vijay Sethupathi, Tabu among winners

Melbourne: The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2019, the star-studded awards ceremony, took place last night and the winners have been announced.

Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy walked away with the Best Film honour. While Vijay Sethupathi won the Best Actor for his widely-acclaimed Tamil movie Super Deluxe, Tabu was awarded in the Best Actress category for her performance in Andhadhun. Andhadhun also won its helmer Sriram Raghavan the Best Director Award. Rohit Shetty directorial Simmba took home the People’s Choice award.

Shah Rukh Khan was honoured with the Excellence in Cinema award and twenty years of his film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was also celebrated at the festival.

This year, the jury of the film festival witnessed an impressive array of new members stepping into the shoes, while the ones returning include Jill Bilcock, who is an Academy Award-winning editor of films like Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet, and Elizabeth. Joining Jill for the first time was legendary filmmaker and screenwriter, Fred Schepisi, whose work includes the Six Degrees of Separation.

TV actor Karan Tacker hosted the evening and singer Amaal Malik mesmerised the Australian audience with his soulful voice. Several videos of his performance made the rounds on the internet. Among those who graced the red carpet were Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora and Zoya Akhtar.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne started on August 8 and will continue till August 15. The festival will screen over 60 films from all across India and the subcontinent in over 22 languages.
