Rourkela: A married woman was allegedly gang-raped by the husband of a Sarpanch and his associate at Jhirpani panchayat office under Bisra block in Sundargarh district.
Although the incident took place on July 4, it came to the fore after the survivor lodged a complaint with Jhirpani Police on Thursday morning.
According to the plaint, the victim had gone to Jhirpani panchayat office on July 3 to inquire about the distribution of rice under the State Food Security scheme. However, the accused Ajay Xalxo, husband of Jhirpani Sarpanch, asked the woman to come the next day (July 4).
When the woman reached the panchayat office the following day morning, the accused and his associate, whose identities were not ascertained, called her to the rooftop of the godown where they took turns to rape her, the complaint stated.
The accused duo also threatened the victim to eliminate her if she discloses the matter to anyone. On reaching home, the woman narrated her ordeal to her father, who preferred to hush up the matter fearing social stigma. Following the intervention of victim’s uncle, she lodged a complaint this morning.
As it is a very sensitive case, Jhirpani IIC Raisan Murmu and a lady sub-inspector have jointly recorded the statement of the victim and launched a probe into the matter, sources added.
