Woman burnt to death by in-laws for dowry in Khurda

Khurda: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and in-laws after she failed to meet their dowry demands at Dinagar village under Begunia police limits in Khurda district.

The deceased was identified as Chandrakanti Barik.

Chandrakanti, who hailed from Parvatipur village under Fathegarh police limits in Nayagarh district, had married Debashish Barik 10 years back. The couple had a daughter and a son.

During the wedding, Chandrakanti’s in-laws had demanded Rs 50,000 cash and other household articles as dowry. However, her father managed to pay on Rs 20,000.

Soon after the marriage, Chandrakanti’s in-laws started torturing her demanding more dowry and a motorcycle. When she expressed her inability to pay the amount, she was subjected to inhumane torture by her in-laws.

On Sunday night, Debashish and his father and mother allegedly poured kerosene on Chandrakanti and set her on fire. She was first admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Khurda with 90 per cent burns. Later, she was shifted to Sum hospital in Bhubaneswar. After the incident, Chandrakanti’s husband called up her family and informed that she sustained burns due to gas leakage.

In her dying statements, the victim explained how she was being tortured by her in-laws for dowry. She said her husband and in-laws poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim’s father, police registered a case against Chandrakanti’s husband and in-laws. “The accused are absconding. Efforts are on to nab them. Further probe is underway,” police said.
