Violence erupts in West Bengal during last phase polling


Kolkata: Clashes have erupted between the BJP and TMC workers in Diamond Harbour and Basirhat seats in West Bengal on Sunday during last phase of polls.

The left leaders have alleged EVM rigging even as the BJP has complained of booth capturing by TMC goons at several polling stations in the constituencies.

The saffron party has levelled a serious allegations against TMC saying that TMC goons were intimidating the BJP workers throughout the election.

In a latest development,  Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, who is seeking re-election from Diamond Harbour has sent a libel notice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making “wildly fabricated allegations” against him.

Modi had said the bua-bhatija duo have been torturing the state.

It may be recalled that West Bengal has witnessed violence in all the previous six phases of polling. In the sixth phase, a vehicle belonging to BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh was vandalised and she was herself heckled allegedly by TMC women workers.

In Bankura district, clashes broke out between workers of the BJP and Trinamool Congress. BJP state chief Dilip Ghosh accused Trinamool Congress workers of attacking him at a booth in Rampura.

The Election Commission had curtailed campaigning time for the seventh phase by invoking the Constitution’s Article 324 due to the violence in the state.
