‘Udta Bhubaneswar’: Illicit drug abuse, trafficking continues in spite of vigilance


Bhubaneswar: Illicit drug trafficking, abuse has penetrated like an epidemic in city in spite of police and excise department’s action with seizure incidents of narcotics seen every now and then from some areas like Haladipadia, Laxmi Sagar, Bomikhal.

Amid such a backdrop tensions which has been prevailing in Haladipadia area of city for past some weeks boiled on Sunday as a group clash occurred rendering injuries to as many as five persons from each side.

As per sources, some peddlers out sparked a scuffle near residence of Ram Singh alleging him for leaking out information to police on their clandestine drugs business. But with both Singh and his wife Gita refuting the accusations uncouth persons rushed into their house and started manhandling them. This led to a clash between the some locals and the drug traffickers.

The situation was getting out of hand as police arrived in the meantime and placated the situation. More than 10 persons from both sides have been detained and interrogated.

Sources said even after regular raids from both police and excise department the condition is still the same. Being considered as the hub of drugs business Laxmisagar area of city has become a haven for abusers and peddlers alike.

Few days back about 90 gm of brown sugar worth of Rs 10 lakh was seized from the area. Meanwhile sources claim that due to good marketing and demand the business is spreading like never before as black marketing is also being done.

Some other notorious places like slums near kalpana chowk, Bomikhal level crossing station is attracting young mass especially school and college goers to engage in this dangerous habituation of brown sugar, heroine.
