Two ships catch fire in Kerch Strait: Sambalpur youth among six missing

Sambalpur: A youth from Sambalpur is among the six Indians who went missing after two ships carrying Indian, Turkish and Libyan crew caught fire in the Kerch Strait off Russia coast on Monday.

Siddharth Meher, a resident of Sambalpur, was in the Maestro vessel when the explosion took place.

According to sources, two ships carrying Indian, Turkish and Libyan crew caught fire while moving through the Kerch Strait after one of them was apparently rocked by an explosion.

At least 11 sailors died while six others went missing in the mishap.

One of the ships, the Candy, had a 17-member crew, including nine Turkish citizens and eight Indian nationals.

Whereas the other one, the Maestro, had 15-member crew, including seven Turkish nationals, seven Indian citizens and an intern from Libya.

The Indian embassy in Moscow is in constant touch with the concerned Russian agencies to extend necessary assistance, while search operation is underway to trace the missing persons.
