Two nabbed from Bihar in UCO Bank loot case


Bhubaneswar: Police on Tuesday said the plot of September 28 brazen robbery at UCO bank near Raj Mahal Square was executed on lines with Akshaya Kumar starrer Special 26. Commissioner of police Y B Khurania said two of the gang were arrested from Bihar. At least 20 people were involved in the planning of the loot, police said.

“The two accused Vijay Shah and Bhagwat Thakur, arrested in Bihar are being brought to Bhubaneswar on transit remand. They were arrested from Patna and Begusarai in Bihar. CJM Begusarai has allowed a seven day transit remand for one of them while another accused will soon be produced before CJM Vaishali,” Khurania said. He said the mastermind of the crime is still at large.

“The duo claimed they don’t know the ring leader. The mastermind called the accused to Bhubaneswar over phone. The duo are established businessmen in Bihar,” Khurania said. Taking a cue from Special 26, the mastermind hatched the robbery plan and did not share with gang members till execution of the offence.

Around five armed goons had held the bank staff and visitors hostage and decamped with cash and gold worth over Rs 40 lakh. Commissionerate Police had sent an independent squad to hunt the criminals associated with the broad daylight loot and conducted investigation in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Delhi and various places in Chhattisgarh and Bihar. As per police sources, the gang had looted banks in four states and police from all four states had conducted a joint operation to nab them.
