Transgender introduced as third gender option in Railway, IRCTC forms


New Delhi: In a plucky move Indian Railways and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have included transgender as third gender in the option male and female in ticket reservation and cancellation forms.

Following the representation made by a Delhi based lawyer who included the facility for reservations and cancellations available both online as well offline, the decision was taken.

In 2014, April in a judgment Supreme Court has directed to the ministry that hijras, eunuchs, apart from binary gender, be treated as third gender for the purpose of safeguarding their rights under Part III of our Constitution and the laws made by the parliament and the State Legislature.
