Tirupati temple receives Rs 4 cr of demonetized currency

Tirupati: The famous Tirupati Tirumala temple has received over Rs 4 crore in denominations of demonetized 500 and 1000 rupee notes from devotees in its donation box in past 2 months.

The temple administration has approached the government and the Reserve Bank of India seeking a response over fate of the accumulated notes, an official said.

The temple was thronged by thousands of devotees from across the country to offer the invalid notes after the exchange period of demonetized notes expired on December 30.

The Executive officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) D Sambasiva Rao said, it’s a regular practice of devotees to save a part of their daily expenditure in tiny boxes kept in Puja rooms of their houses over a period and then the amount gets deposited in the temple when they undertake pilgrimage to the temple. So they may have deposited what they had saved even if it was in demonetized notes.
