New Delhi: An article in the Asia edition of the Time magazine published recently was highly critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The cover story is entitled: “Can the World’s Largest Democracy Endure Another Five Years of a Modi Government?”
The author of the article is Aatish Taseer. He dwells upon the rising populism in the democratic system in India.
His article also talks about countries like Turkey, Brazil, Britain and the US in this respect.
The author of the article has accused Modi of maintaining silence on 2002 Gujarat pogrom that described him as “a friend of the mob”.
The article also indicted the Prime Minister of remaining silent on cow slaughters.
The US based Time magazine has said in its article after 2014“the achievements of independent India such as secularism, liberalism, a free press–came to be seen in the eyes of many as part of a grand conspiracy”.
The cover story of the iconic magazine has dubbed Modi as ‘divider in chief’ that has led to the polarization of electorate. This is an apparent reference to Hindutva politics of the saffron party.
The article further stated that populism has given rise to grievances among majorities in the country.
