Angul: Royal Bengal tigress ‘Sundari’ allegedly attacked and killed a woman at Hatibari village near Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Angul district on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Kailashi Garnayak. She was missing since morning.
According to sources, the woman had gone to take bath in a pond near the village in the morning. When she did not return home, the villagers launched a frantic search. Later, her body was found in the forest.
The villagers blamed the forest department for the death of the woman. They alleged that the forest officials failed to capture the wild animal despite their repeated pleas.
The villagers alleged that the tigress was on the prowl around their village yesterday, triggering panic among the residents.
The forest department officials visited the spot and launched a probe to find out the circumstances leading to the death of the woman.
Earlier, the residents of Katarang village near Satkosia Tiger Reserve had detained some forest officials over the presence of a tigress near their village.
Notably, tigress ‘Sundari’ was brought from Bandhavgarh was released into Satkosia Tiger Reserve from a special enclosure on August 17.
