Three juveniles among five highway looters held
Khandagiri: Three among the five persons arrested on Tuesday for allegedly involved in the highway loots in Khandagiri area of Bhubaneswar are minors and will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board today.
Police arrested the gang of five looters on Tuesday. Two among them, identified as Govinda Jena of Khurda and Sunil Jena of Nayagarh, were produced before a court yesterday and sent to judicial custody.
According to sources, the police came across the highway robbery gang while investigating a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by one Sasmita of Baramunda on August 31.
In her complaint, Sasmita said she was heading to her in-laws’ house in Baramunda area when the looters stalked her and snatched gold ornaments from her purse in Khandagiri area. On the basis of the complaint, police launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.
Acting on a tip-off, police yesterday raided their hideouts and arrested the gang. The police seized two bikes, 22 cellphones, two necklaces and other gold ornaments from their possession.
The accused were active in Tomando, Patrapada, Aiginia, Janla and other areas in the city. They used to target commuters in the afternoon and after dusk, said a police official.
