Technology outsmarts robbers, two in police net

Bhubaneswar: A bike tracking device helped the Commissionerate police arrest two dreaded highway robbers, who were wanted in more than 30 cases in Bhubaneswar and Khurda. The accused Mohammad Asif and Jafar Shah were arrested by Nayapalli police here while they trying to repair a stolen bike, which was fitted with tracker device.

“Their luck ran out as the accused were ignorant about the tracker device. The accused recently stole the costly bike from the NH near Khurda. The Khurda police had alerted all police stations about the bike. Today morning, we got a tip-off about the presence of the bike near Jayadev Vihar. We rounded up the accused,” said a police officer.

Police seized two country-made revolvers and some live bullets from the accused, who were arrested by different district police several times in the past. “They are notorious criminals, belonging to Nirakarpur in Puri district. We suspect they were involved in more than 30 highway robbery cases in different districts. We will seek their remand for further interrogation,” the police officer added.

In a related development, the Chandrasekharpur police on Monday arrested one Sanjit Kumar Ray on charges of committing theft and snatching of mobile phones in Bhubaneswar. Police recovered 16 pieces of stolen mobile handsets from him. Ray, a resident of Nuagaon in Jagatsingpur was earlier arrested on similar charges by Nayapalli, Saheed Nagar, Laxmisagar and Khandagiri police.
