Superstition: Villagers worship girl as deity in Odisha
In yet another instance of superstition prevailing in tribal community of Odisha, a 20-year-old girl in Nabarangpur district, who was found sitting on fast since last five days in a dense forest, is being worshiped as a deity by nearby villagers.
It is alleged that the young girl has been possessed by some divine spirit after she had a darshan of Goddess Parvati, as she has claimed before her parents.
The girl, identified as Dalimba Mali, daughter of Jagat Mali of Dhanasuli village in Tumbarla Panchayat under Papadahandi block has been meditating near a termite mound in a nearby forest without food and water for the last five days.
According to reports, five days ago Dalimba had gone to a forest near the village for collecting mushroom. She was found sitting quietly after returning from the forest. When her parents asked her of any problem, the girl said she had a darshan of Goddess Parvati in the forest and urged to go to the deity she had met.
Her family members got panicked and sought the help of a sorcerer of neighbouring village following her unusual behaviour
After returning from the sorcerer, the parents found her absent in the house following which villagers conducted a search operation in nearby areas and forest. Later, she was found sitting near a termite mound praying God.
Finding her in such a condition, they informed the villagers. The villagers started believing that she has been possessed by some divine spirit and let her meditate there and began worshipping the girl. Even some of the villagers were found guarding her near the termite ground setting up a temporary camp in the forest.
