SUM tragedy: Bail hearing of Manoj Nayak complete; Court reserves verdict

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Additional District Judge-II Court on Thursday reserved the verdict after hearing the bail plea of SUM hospital owner Manoj Nayak accused in the fire tragedy.

After the police submitted the case diary today, the hearing began in the afternoon. “Nayak can at most be tried for Sec 285 and Sec 304 a. His role is limited in the day to day affairs of the hospital,” noted criminal advocate and prosecution lawyer Dharanidhar Nayak said.

Police had furnished the Court with autopsy reports of the deceased victims who lost their lives during the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Manoj’s wife Saswati Das and his sister Arati Nayak who are all trustees of Siksha o Anusandhan Charitable Trust moved the Odisha High Court seeking anticipatory bail to avoid possible arrest in the case since Police had already issued circular against Saswati while she is yet to appear before it.

Notably, 19 patients died while more than hundred were injured as a severe fire broke out in the Dialysis ward of SUM Hospital on Monday last week. Out of others, nine so far have also succumbed to injuries during treatment at other hospitals talking the total toll to 28 so far. Manoj’s plea could not be taken up for hearing on Tuesday since police failed to submit the case diary in the matter.
