SUM fire outbreak: Deaths occurred due to smoke, asphyxiation, say hospital officials


Bhubaneswar: After the severe  tragedy at SUM Hospital which claimed 22 lives Monday evening, Public Relation Officer Jyotiprakash Das of the hospital briefed media clarifying that deaths occurred more due to asphyxiation as there was too much smoke inside of the chamber which caught fire.

“Meanwhile three electrician officials have been suspended after investigation into the incident,” Das said.

“Barring services in Emergency, Medicine and Dialysis wards which have been sealed off due to their dilapidated and defunct condition treatment in other departments has resumed in other departments,” he said.

“Yesterday 19 persons died while more than 100 have been injured. Most of them were admitted at various hospitals while some left with their family members. Since health services have resumed well now that they have started to return,” Jyotiprakash said.

“Compensation for the kin of the dead and injured victims will be announced very soon,” he said.
