Students’ Union polls end peacefully; BCJD wins in 95% colleges in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: Even though the police had beefed up security arrangements, the Students’ Union elections passed off peacefully in various colleges across Odisha on Saturday.
As the election results were declared in the evening, the victorious candidates and their supporters celebrated their win by holding bike rallies and fireworks in their campuses in the state.
Soubhagya Soumyashree Samal supported by Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) won as the president of Ramadevi Women’s University. Similarly, Rajat Kumar Parida elected as president of Rajdhani College. Punyabrata Das and Subhendu kumar Amat won as president in Jagatsinghpur SVM College and Angul Autonomous College, respectively.
Earlier, tension prevailed in Ramadevi Women’s University here during the Students’ Union poll over alleged distribution of Rs 500 notes for fetching votes.
A group of students alleged that BCJD members were offering Rs 500 to students for voting in the favour of the candidate supported by it.
A photo of a student holding a rose flower and a Rs 500 currency note went viral on social media adding fuel to the fire. However, the BCJD has rubbished the allegation.
The BCJD claimed to have won the polls in 95 per cent of the colleges in the State.
