State BJP slams Govt for failing to tackle JE menace

Bhubaneswar: With the deadly Japanese Encephalitis claiming dozens of lives in a month or so, and the State Government not able to contain the death toll, State BJP Secretary Bhrugu Buxipatra on Sunday lashed criticisms on state government saying it has failed on all aspects and is marred with discrepancies in all its actions to mitigate the menace.

Speaking at a press meet here, Buxipatra said, “till now at least 150 kids have succumbed to the fatal disease but all this while the administration is fooling people by gilding with fake reports of 54 death cases due to JE.”

Even appropriate number of nets has also not been supplied. While the government had claimed that it would distribute 30 lakhs medicinal nets but so far only a paltry 11,000 have been given, he said.

Speaking on the spread of the disease in Malkangiri, the most afflicted district, he said out of seven blocks in all, six are badly affected by the deadly virus. The situation is very alarming. “State Government’s reactive stance is all responsible for this. Since during 2015-16 the situation was not reviewed inspite of the fact that the outbreak had shown its preliminary symptoms the condition has worsened now,” Bhrugu said.

“Besides, 140 enclosures set up in six blocks of the district to contain the pigs, is not enough.” He added.

“When the Union Government is ready to help in the issue why the State Government is not ready to ask for it. Moreover, why did CM Naveen Patnaik not met the Union Health Minister to seek assistance,” Buxipatra questioned.
