Cuttack: An elephant, recovered in a critical condition at Haladibasanta village under Dalijoda forest range in Cuttack district yesterday, succumbed to illness on Sunday morning.
According to sources, the tusker was being treated by a veterinary team from OUAT in Bhubaneswar. The tusker developed mouth infection which led to its death, said an official.
Though it is still unclear as to how the jumbo sustained the injury that led to the mouth infection, it is suspected that fight with another tusker might be the reason.
Notably, locals spotted the tusker on Saturday morning and alerted the forest officials. The jumbo was part of a herd of seven elephants that had ventured into the village area three days back.
