Tharoor is now out of danger, reports said.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP has suffered head injuries while performing ‘thulabharam’ ritual at a temple here.

Reliable sources said Tharoor had six stitches on his head.

The incident occurred when the weighing scale at the temple  came off and hit his head.

The weighing scale was unhooked and came crashing on his head. He was taken to Trivandrum Medical College hospital for detailed examination, party sources said.

Television channels showed the former union minister getting into a car with a bandaged head and waving to onlookers wearing a blood-stained kurta.

‘Thulabharam’ is a Hindu ritual in which a person is weighed against a commodity. These may be flowers, grains, fruits and other articles offered as donation.

According to reports, Monday is the Malayalam new year day (‘Vishu’) and Tharoor performed the ritual at a Devi temple here in the morning before starting his poll campaign.
