New Delhi: The Supreme Court has questioned why CBI director Alok Verma was divested of his powers without consulting selection committee.
Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has asked the Centre to explain why immediate steps were not taken to consult the selection committee.
Gogoi told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the government has to be fair on the matter.
Mehta replied that the CVC had come to the conclusion that an extraordinary situation had arisen. Extraordinary situations at times need extraordinary remedies, he added.
To the reply the bench then questioned why the government has not approached the selection committee till date.
The apex court observed that the infighting within the CBI did not emerge overnight.
Defending the Centre Mehta said the fight between the two officers would have taken an ugly turn had the government not taken timely action.
