Santosh Roul’s hearing over charges framed by Odisha Crime Branch deferred to May 17

Cuttack: The SC/ST Special Court in Cuttack on Friday deferred the hearing on the charges framed against Sarathi Baba alias Santosh Roul to May 17.

Though the self-proclaimed godman appeared before the Orissa High Court, the move was taken by the court of law as two other accused failed to depose.

A charge sheet has been filed by the State Crime Branch against the controversial self-proclaimed godman. The scheduled hearing was adjourned over the charges framed against Roul in the ‘Rosaline Mallick case’.

The Crime Branch had registered a case against Roul on charges under relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He was also charged with extortion, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Sarathi Baba alias Santosh Roul was arrested on August 7, 2015, by the CID-Crime Branch following the surfacing of a sex scandal involving him at his Ashram at Barimula in Kendrapada district.

Initially, the CID-CB had registered a case against him on charges of cheating, forgery, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation. Later, he was also charged under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Religious Institutions (Prevention of Misuse) Act.
