Bhubaneswar: While very few films are made for children in Odia, Santosh Panda’s film ‘Sabas Biju’ has won accolades and praises at National Children’s Film Festival. The NCFF was held at Jaipur between November 14 and 16 this year in which handful of children’s films after thorough selection process were picked up for screening.
The two-hour long film is about an 11-year-old boy who is inspired by freedom fighter and former chief minister of Odisha, Biju Pattnaik. The protagonist is named after this legendary leader whose legends about his adventurous pursuits have inspired many people. The child then takes steps to learn about child rights and help others.
“The film was well appreciated by guests that included Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Mukesh Khanna, Ila Arun and child artist Darsheell Safary and others. It’s an honour to get selected to be screened in the NCFF where very few films make the cut. Besides being praised by the greats of cinema world is another good thing,” said Panda who has made several short films that have won national and international awards.
The film has mostly kids from slums and government run schools who had never been exposed to filmmaking earlier and they have given wonderful performances. Snehal Sujal Mohanty and Subhangi Panda play the leads along with other kids. Known Odia film actors like Harihara Mohapatra, Binayakk Mishra, Chitta Nanda, Mili Mohanty, Kuni Panda, Dharitri Khandual, Manoj Mohapatra, Anant Mishra and others also have acted in this film.
