Sundergarh: In a tragic road accident, three school students and the auto-rickshaw driver were killed on the spot while one student succumbed to treatment at the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) here on Friday and the rest other students sustained critical injuries when a speeding dumper rammed into the auto carrying them.
The dumper driver managed to flee from the site immediately after the accident. Looking on to the incident, locals rushed to the spot for rescue operation.
All the injured school students were first admitted to nearby Roxy hospital from where they were all rushed to Lahunipada Community Health Centre (CHC). Ambulance was kept ready at the CHC from where they were shifted to IGH in the steel city for better treatment as their conditions were stated to be serious.
As per sources, the accident took place on Friday at around 12.15 pm near Koemba at K Balang under Bonaigarh sub-division in Sundargarh district. The auto-rickshaw was carrying about 10 students as they were returning from St John School there in the area.
Later in the evening, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressing his deep condolences and sympathy for the families announced and Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to each killed and free treatment for the injured admitted in hospital.
