Rayagada asphyxiation death: Naveen announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for kin


Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the death of five labourers due to asphyxiation in Rayagada district and announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia each for the next of the kin of the deceased persons.

Terming the incident unfortunate that took place at Bissam Cuttack today, the Chief Minister conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

According to sources, the five labourers including a woman died due to asphyxiation after they got trapped inside an under-construction septic tank at Durgi Paikasahi area in Rayagada district.

The deceased were identified as Rashmita Ulaka, Bairagi Kalka, Surya Narayan Patro, Bansidhar Patro and Purna Takiri.

The labourers were working near the septic tank when a woman accidentally fell into the septic tank. In a bid to rescue the woman, five other labourers entered the tank. However, they got stuck inside and fell ill due to suffocation. They were rescued in a critical condition and rushed to Christian hospital in Bissam Cuttack.

Five of them died while undergoing treatment and another labourer identified as Kartik Gouda is stated to be critical.
