Cuttack: A public interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in Orissa High Court today seeking to bring the petrol and diesel prices under the ambit of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Social activist Surendra Panigrahi filed the PIL mentioning the Union Petroleum Secretary, Finance Secretary, Finance Minister, State Chief Secretary and Chairpersons of oil marketing companies – HPCL, IOCL, and BPCL as opposite party.
Panigrahi has petitioned the High Court for doing away with the levy of central excise and value added tax (VAT) on petroleum products and its inclusion under the ambit of GST, informed Antaryami Swain, councilor of the petitioner.
Notably, the steep rise in the price of petrol, diesel and cooking gas has evoked nationwide public outrage and opposition has cornered the BJP government over the price rise.
Today Odisha’s ruling BJD observed a five-hour long bandh against it.
