PhD scholar among 2 militants gunned down in J&K’s Kupwara
Srinagar: Two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, including a PhD scholar of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), were gunned down by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday.
According to sources, at least three militants were trapped inside a house in Shatgund Balla area of Handwara. Acting on a tip-off, Indian Army’s 30 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) launched a cordon in the area on Thursday morning.
Though the militants were asked to surrender they denied doing so, and opened fire on the security forces. In retaliation, the cops gunned down the two militants.
The police officials said, one of the militants killed in the gun battle has been identified as Manan Wani, a PhD scholar of Applied Geology at AMU.
The killing of militants come at a time when the civic polls are underway on the state and the Hizbul Mujahideen has issued warnings to the contestants as well as the voters.
Manan Wani (25) who hailed from Takipora in Kupwara district had joined militant ranks earlier this year. He is said to be inspired by Hizbul Mujahideen’s commander Burhan Wani who was killed in 2016.
