Pangolin smuggling: STF seeks 3-day remand 5 accused

Rayagada: The Special Task Force (STF) of the Crime Branch on Thursday sought three-day remand of five persons arrested in connection with a pangolin smuggling racket in Rayagada district.

The STF sought the remand of the arrested persons to interrogate them and unearth their links with inter-district and interstate criminals and their previous antecedents.

The arrested persons have been identified as Balaram Behera of Bhubaneswar, Ashish Dash of Puri, Amulya Kumar Barik of Jajpur, Laxmi Sabar of Palasa in Andhra Pradesh and Saubhagya Laxmi Behera of Chandrasekharpur in Bhubaneswar.

Notably, a joint team of Gunupur police and forest department had arrested five persons including two women for smuggling pangolins during a raid at Gunupur new bus stand.

During the search, the officials found a live pangolin weighing about 10 kg from a Chevrolet Beat car bearing registration No OD-02-AM 7104.
