Bhubaneswar: Ashish Kumar Nayak, one of the accused in Odisha Rural Housing Development Corporation (ORHDC) scam, surrendered before the vigilance on Saturday.
The vigilance officials arrested Nayak following his surrender in connection with the financial irregularities in the corporation to the tune of Rs 55 lakh.
On July 3, a special vigilance court had convicted Nayak and five others including IAS officer and former ORHDC Managing Director Binod Kumar for their involvement in the scam.
During the hearing, Sanjay Mohanty, assistant manager of ORHDC, had appeared in the court. After taking into consideration the statements of the witnesses and other evidence, the court convicted the six accused.
The court sentenced Sanjay to nine years jail and imposed Rs 75,000 penalty. Similarly, the court issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against the five absentees.
In 2000, the Vigilance had registered a case against Kumar and the five employees of the corporation for their alleged involvement in the financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 55 lakh. Kumar is now posted as officer on special duty (OSD) in the Higher Education Department.
