One killed, several injured as under construction flyover collapses in Odisha


Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, at least one person died and many others were injured after a portion of an under construction flyover collapsed at Bomikhal area in Odisha capital today. Two others are reportedly trapped under the debris.

The deceased died on the spot, has been identified as Satya Patnaik (40), a resident of Jharpada area was returning back home carrying his daughter Shital (10) from her dance class on a motorcycle when the accident occurred.

The father-daughter duo was rushed to Capital hospital where Satya was declared brought dead by the attending dead. Later, Shital was shifted to AIIMS as her health condition deteriorated.

According to reports, around 15 persons have been injured in the mishap.  Fire personnel and Odisha disaster rapid action force reached the spot and rescue operations are under way. Two NDRF teams have also been engaged in the rescue operation. The injured have been admitted to city based hospitals here.

Four sniffer dogs have been engaged to locate the trapped person. The cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik visited the injured at Capital hospital and AIIMS this afternoon and discussed their health conditions with the doctors. The CM also met Sheetal who lost her father in the tragedy and enquired about her health condition. The attending doctor of AIIMS said that the girl is out of danger.


He expressed deep grief over the incident after visiting the hospitals and said, “Stringent action will be taken against those found guilty.”

He also said that no one will be spared whosoever he may be.

Earlier in the day, he had announced Rs five lakh ex-gratia from the Chief Minister Relief Fund to the next kin of the deceased.

Free treatment will be provided to the injured by the government, he added.

A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident, he further added.


Deputy Executive Engineer Bansidhar Praharaj and Assistant Engineer Kishore Rout have been placed under suspension.

Governor Dr. SC Jamir also expressed grief over the loss of life in the collapse and wished speedy recovery of the injured.

The rescue operation completed at around 8 pm this night with no more casualty. “The rescue operation has been completed and no more casualty reported,” informed city mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.
