New Delhi: Riding on a five-fer by veteran pacer Basant Mohanty and then on two centuries from skipper Govinda Poddar and opener Anurag Sarangi, Odisha registered a convincing victory over Assam in a group-A Vijay Hazare Trophy Interstate One-day match played at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi today.
Odisha scored 213 for the loss of one wicket in 35.3 overs and defeated their eastern counterpart who had made 207 in 48.2 overs losing all their wickets, after being asked to bat first.
Assam that lost its first wicket on 4 run had been reduced to 76 for 5 in 23 overs. But a 83 runs partnership between captain KB Arun Karthick (56 off 73) and Syed Mohmmad (53 off 72) in 17 overs helped them revive the innings. But the lower order couldn’t stay strong against the coordinated attack from Odisha and they could manage only 207 runs.
Basant scalped 5 for 26 runs while Deepak Behera took 3 for 47 runs and Dheeraj Singh bagged 2 for 36 runs.
Odisha lost its first wicket on 7 when opener and half-centurion in first match Sandeep Pattnaik was clean bowled by Arup Das on the second ball he faced for just 1 runs. Captain Govinda Poddar joined Anurag Sarangi and the duo added 206 runs to take their team past the opposition totals. In the process Poddar hit a 90 ball 100 with 15 fours and one six while Sarangi made a sedate 104 off 121 balls hitting 9 fours and 3 times over the fence.
