Odisha DGP refutes rumours about child lifting
Bhubaneswar: Director General of Police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma on Sunday refuted the allegations of the presence of child lifting gangs in various parts of the state and termed it as rumours.
“The reports of child theft incidents coming from various parts of the state are false. The rumours being spread on various social media platforms are misleading people. Due to the false propaganda, people suspect that child lifting gangs are prowling in their areas to steal their children and thrashing innocent people,” Sharma told mediapersons.
Sharma said he has directed the superintendents of police of all districts to prevent such rumours from spreading in their respective areas. He said the SPs have been asked to clarify such doubts arising in the minds of people of their districts and stop spreading it further.
Notably, several cases of thrashing of innocent persons by angry mob suspecting them as child thieves continue to pour in from various parts of the state. The rumours which first started doing the rounds in Rayagada district spread to Kandhamal and Nayagarh district.
However, the police are yet to confirm the presence of such gang of criminals.
notably, the child lifting rumours sparked tension in Kandhamal after Ganjam. Some villagers roughed up a person suspecting him to be a child kidnapper at Malipada, about 2km from Tumudibandh police limits in Kandhamal Saturday evening.
