Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) RP Sharma has issued a circular to all SPs and DCPs directing to take strict action against persons involved in vandalising public property during rallies, processions, and agitations, as per a directive issued by the Supreme Court.
The DGP, in the circular, also mentioned that police should immediately inform the Crime Branch with reports and file an FIR against the persons involved in such activity after assessing the damage caused in incidents of violence.
The Crime Branch will, in turn, submit a report to the State government.
If there is any delay by police in filing FIR or conducting the investigation, it would be considered as dereliction of duty on the part of the concerned officer, said the circular.
The accused persons will be obliged to pay for the loss during the vandalism, and in case of more than one person’s involvement in such incident, each of them will have to jointly pay the quantified loss.
In areas where there is a potential for trouble, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC should be imposed, the circular further stated read.
