Bhubaneswar: Thousands of farmers under the banner of Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) today resorted to a dharna for indefinite period at Lower PMG here demanding ‘price, pension and prestige’ for farmers of the state.
It is the first protest after the body’s adviser Soumya Ranjan Patnaik joined the ruling BJD and filed nomination for Rajya Sabha poll.
However, the farmers said Patnaik’s joining in BJD will have no impact on their agitation.
NKS Convenor Akshay Kumar said the agitation will intensify and reach at the grassroots level if the state government does not pay heed to their demands.
Worth mentioning, the NKS has been demanding hike of minimum support price (MSP) for paddy to Rs 5,000 per quintal and pension of Rs 5,000 per month for 36 lakh farmers of the state.
