Kalahandi: The body of a night guard of Chandapur pump house was found floating in Kulerbhatta canal under Jaipatna police limits in Kalahandi district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Gobardhan Naik (25) of Mangalpur’s Nuapada village. Naik, who was a night guard at Kanakpur Hati Barrage pump house at Chandapur, went missing on February 8 (Friday).
According to sources, some thieves made an attempt to steal asbestos from the pump house but Naik raised an alarm and they had to flee from the spot on Thursday night. Naik also recovered the stolen asbestos from the nearby school with two other staff of the pump house.
However, the next day Naik went missing and his family member lodged a complaint with the local police. Despite a frantic search by police and family, Naik remained untraceable.
Some local this morning spotted a body floating in the canal and later Naik’s family members identified him in the presence of police.
On the other hand, family sources alleged that he has been murder and then dumped in the water body. They also claimed that there were several injury marks on Gobardhan’s body.
The body has been seized for post-mortem and a probe is underway into this case, the police said.
