‘Near normal’ southwest monsoon this year: IMD

New Delhi: Monsoon is likely to be near normal this year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday, raising hopes for higher farm output and a boost to the rain-dependent rural economy.

According to the long range forecast for 2019, monsoon rainfall is expected to be 96 per cent of a long-term average and southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September) rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be near normal this year.

The IMD also forecasted that weak El Nino conditions are likely to prevail during the monsoon season with reduced intensity in the later part of the season.

The latest bulletin also informed that it would issue the second stage of monsoon in the year during the first week of June.
