NDA inches closer to Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman post with Naveen’s support

Bhubaneswar: Soon after arriving at Bhubaneswar from Mumbai, Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday said his party will support to NDA-backed JD(U) candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh for the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman post.

The election is scheduled to be held today.

“BJD believes that when it comes to constitutional posts such as Speaker and Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, unanimity should be there. The party waited for a unanimous decision to emerge but it did not happen. Two candidates, one from JD(U) and other Congress are contesting and the BJD will support JD(U) since the JD(U) and BJD have emerged from the Jay Prakash Narayan movement while the Congress candidate was AICC in charge of Odisha and vitriolic in his statements against the BJD and Hon’ble CM,” a release of the party read.

The BJD yesterday informed media that Naveen had a call from Modi few days back seeking support for NDA candidate for the post of the Deputy Chairman in the upper house.

Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar on Tuesday spoke to Naveen over phone seeking the BJD’s support for NDA candidate Harivansh Naryan Singh for the post.

BJP president Amit Shah and Home Minister Rajnath Singh had also telephoned Patnaik seeking his support for the NDA candidate.

Currently, there are 244 members in the Rajya Sabha and support of 123 members is needed for a win in the full House.

The BJD has nine members in the Upper House. Win for the NDA candidate has become a certainty with the support of BJD.

The Deputy Chairman post of Rajya Sabha has remained vacant after PJ Kurien retired on June 30.
