Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday condoled the passing away of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Dr M Karunanidhi.
The five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu and the DMK president died in Kauvery Hospital at 6.10 pm. He was 94.
Recalling the veteran leader’s contribution towards social justice and development as well as Tamil literature and cinema, Patnaik prayed for strength to his family in this moment of grief.
The Chief Minister has asked two senior BJD leaders to attend the funeral of the late DMK chief at Chennai tomorrow.
According to reports, BJD vice president Debi Prasad Mishra and Finance minister Sashi Bhusan Behera will leave for Chennai to attend the funeral of the late Dravidian icon, on behalf of BJD.
Meanwhile, a controversy is brewing over the allocation of the last resting place of the DMK patriarch. Tamil Nadu government has rejected permission to bury M Karunanidhi at the iconic Marina Beach in Chennai.
The Tamil Nadu government has reportedly cited pending PIL’s before the Madras High Court, pleading building of memorials at the beach were in contravention to Coastal Regulation Rules. The government has instead offered alternative sites for the burial, including Gandhy Mandapam at Guindy.
