Murder-accused sentenced for 7-yrs RI
Dhenkanal: A murder-accused was sentenced seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a district and sessions court in Dhenkanal, the police said today.
The man, identified as Ajay Nayak (44) of Nuakote village in Hindol block in the district was convicted for murdering his wife.
The district and sessions judge, Taraprasad Rath, also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the convict. The convict will have to serve an additional jail term of two months in case of failure to pay the penalty, directed the judge.
According to sources, Ajay used to torture his wife Damayanti (34) over the suspicion of her having an extra-marital affair. While Ajay stayed in Bhubaneswar to work, Damayanti lived in the village.
However, due to the harassment and the torture Damayanti eventually moved to her parent’s house along with her children, sources said.
As per sources, Ajay subsequently convinced his wife and brought her home. But on March 5 last year, the couple indulged in a heated argument following which Ajay thrashed his wife to death.
Acting on the complaint lodged by the deceased’s brother, the accused was arrested. The district and sessions judge pronounced the verdict on the basis of evidence and the statements of 11 witnesses in the case.
