Modi honours descendants of Paika rebellion martyrs at Raj Bhawan


Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Sunday felicitated the descendants of 16 families associated with armed rebellion against British colonialism well known as Paika rebellion of 1817 and other freedom struggles of Odisha at Raj Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.


Modi  lamented the narratives of India’s great freedom struggle were limited to few families, dynasties and events.



The descendants of Jayee Rajguru, Baxi Jagabandhu, Dinabandhu Mohapatra, Veer Surendar Sai, Madhav Singh, Chakhi Khuntia, Chakra Bisoi, Raghunath Mohanty, Dibakar Parida, Lakhman Nayak, Dama Subudhi Mangaraj, Samant Madhav Chandra Routray, Preetibas Patsani, Rendo Majhi and Lakhmi Indira Panda were felicitated during the programme.

“For a self-respecting country like India, it is essential to recall all the martyrs associated with armed rebellion who had sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle. I feel privileged to meet the descendants of martyrs who fought against the British Empire”, said Modi.
