Mentally-challenged woman held for killing infant daughter, woman
Keonjhar: A mentally-challenged woman was arrested on Sunday at Baikunthpur village under Baria police limits of Jhumpura block in Keonjhar district on the charges of allegedly killing her own infant daughter and another woman of the village.
The accused, identified as Laxmi Munda has been suffering from mental illness since a couple of years.
The deceased were identified as Basanti Munda of Baikunthpur village and four-month-old Shrabani Juanga, accused Laxmi’s daughter.
Reportedly, Laxmi was staying with her husband in Namakai village until she developed mental illness and was sent back to her parental house in Baikunthpur.
According to sources, the incident took place on Saturday when Laxmi pushed Basanti into the village pond after a verbal duel, while the latter had gone near the water body to relieve herself.
Though some locals rescued Basanti, she died while being rushed to the hospital, a source said.
When taken home, Laxmi in a fit of rage, strangled her four-month-old baby to death later, on the same day. Her brother also failed to stop her from killing the infant as she attempted to bite, whoever approached her.
Based on an FIR filed by the accused’s brother with Baria police today, the mentally-challenged woman was arrested, a police official said, adding that the bodies have been sent for postmortem and an investigation into the incident is underway.
