Medical students served as Orderlies by Professors; Govt orders probe

Bhubaneswar: State Health Department on Thursday has ordered probe into the allegations of medical students being engaged by professors and HOD’s for personal work.

The probe order came soon after the Directorate of Medical Education & Training (DMET) sent notices to Government medical colleges in the State seeking reports on this issue. The government has asked the head of three government run medical colleges to investigate the issue.

The Health and Family Welfare(H & FW) Additional Secretary Surajit Das has asked the Director of VIMSAR in Burla, Dean and Principal of SCB Medical College, Cuttack and MKCG-Berhampur to conduct inquiry into the issue and take action against the erring professors and Heads of Departments (HoDs).

As per sources, it has been alleged that the HoDs and professors of different departments were engaging PG students in personal and domestic works which severely hampers treatment of patients and education of students.

The students in a letter to DMET have alleged that professors and HoDs are forcing them to undertake domestic work like shopping, cooking, taking the child to school, teaching their children, bringing breakfast, lunch and dinner free of cost, arranging soft and hard drinks, organizing celebrations like birthday and marriage.

In the notice, the Directors and deans have been advised to see that such cases do not repeat in future.
