Christchurch: A number of people were killed after a gunmen sprayed bullets at a crowded mosque in Christchurch in New Zealand during afternoon prayers.
Police sources said the gunmen are still at large. A manhunt is on to locate the perpetrators.
Media reports said the gunmen went on a shooting spree at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Masjid.
Police in a statement said: “A serious and evolving situation is occurring in Christchurch with an active shooter. Police are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high”.
Police Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed that there were multiple fatalities. “Again we are unsure if there are any other locations outside of that area.
News agencies quoting Bush said they have mobilized every police resource in the Canterbury location to respond to the mayhem.
The Prime Minister has described the gory incident as: “One of New Zealand’s darkest days. It was an unprecedented act of violence. Police has apprehended a person, but I don’t have further details of him yet.”
