Malkangiri: Tribals from seven gram panchayats (GPs) of Malkangiri district on Wednesday protested against the construction of a dam by Chhattisgarh on Kokral river.
Scores of tribal men and women participated in a protest march under the banner of Malkangiri Zilla Adivasi Sangh, as there is a threat that both the villages would be submerged due to construction of the dam across the river.
According to sources, the outfit has alleged that though the dam is constructed by Chhattisgarh on its share of the river, it will have an adverse impact on as many as 70 villages in Malkangiri district.
“If the Chattisgarh government will make this dam, then our villages will face several problems. Our state government should take some steps to rehabilitation. We are strongly opposing this dam construction,” said a leader of the Malkangiri Zilla Adivasi Sangh.
The tribals have demanded that the construction of the dam should be immediately stalled or the protest will be intensified, sources added.
