Chennai: As part of the World Water Day celebrations, Larsen & Toubro initiated one of the largest projects to restore 105 water bodies across 25 cities in India and one site in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

This huge CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) task of clearing up ponds and tanks, cleaning wells, strengthening embankments is handled by over 5000 L&T employees, making it a remarkable instance of mass employee volunteerism. Some of the leading cities that will benefit from this programme are New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Kanpur, Pune, Ranchi, Vizag and Chennai.

“Globally, water scarcity is emerging as an extremely serious problem and, as one of the foremost builders of water infrastructure, we have taken the lead to drive home the message that every drop is vital for our survival,” said Mr. S N Subrahmanyan, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro. “It makes me proud that so many of our employees have voluntarily taken up the responsibility to contribute their time and effort to this very socially relevant cause,” he added.

“Water preservation and conservation should be a top priority for every individual on this planet and this is a small step from L&T, to draw attention to this very important message and need of the hour,” is how Mr S Rajavel, Senior Vice President & Head – Water & Smart World Communication, L&T Construction, expressed his view on the initiative. “Last year, we entered the Guinness Book of World Records by organizing the largest environmental sustainability lesson at Chennai and this is another award-winning initiative as one of the largest to restore water bodies,” he remarked.

In Odisha, L&T is working on restoring Lakes and Ponds in the districts of Cuttack, Bolangir, Jaipur, Deogarh and Kalahandi, which are essential water bodies for the sustenance of each region. The efforts are being carried out with the long term view of saving the State’s rapidly depleting groundwater sources.
