Bhubaneswar: Legendary socialist leader Rabi Ray was bid adieu with National honour and his last rites were conducted in birthplace Bhaunragada village of Balipatna, Puri. Many eminent political leaders like Janata Dal United national president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and JDU leader Sharad Yadav attended the crematory ceremony. Ray had passed away while under treatment at SCB Medical in Cuttack at the age of 91 on Monday.
On Tuesday, Ray’s body was taken to Lohia Academy and kept there for sometime for people to pay a last visit. Governor SC Jamir, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, JDU leaders Nitish and Sharad attended the last rites of the prominent politician who was also the only Lok Sabha speaker from Odisha.
A procession was taken out for his last rites when his body was carried to Bhaunragada. Here he was given gun salute.
While the state has been gripped with grief, the state government has observed one day mourning today.
Ray is survived by his writer wife Saraswati Swain while his nephew lit the funeral pyre since the couple did not have children.
