Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh): The 55-day long Kumbh Mela has commenced with the Shahi Snan of Akharas at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh amid tight security on Tuesday.
Police sources said security has been beefed up in and around Prayagraj for the auspicious occasion.
Apart from the sadhus and seers, hundreds of foreign tourists have also assembled here on the occasion.
The Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan had launched special weather services for Kumbh Mela at a function in New Delhi on Monday. This will provide information about the prevailing weather condition and forecasts to the devotees and tourists visiting Prayagraj during Kumbh Mela.
Widely known as the largest human congregation on earth, the Kumbh Mela is expected to be participated by over 130 million pilgrims.
It is a belief among the people that taking a dip in the holy water of Ganges River will pave the way for their salvation. A holy dip will also rid them of their sins.
The Indian Railways have made special arrangements for the passengers in view of the mega event. It has announced five special trains to handle the extra rush of passengers.
Reports said a superfast special train between Allahabad Jn. and Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal will run between the two terminal stations from January 15 and March 3.
