Kendrapara boat capsize: Naveen congratulates sister-duo for bravery
Kendrapara: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the two brave girls of Nipania village of Kendrapara for their heroic act of saving people from drowning in the Kendrapara boat capsize incident.
According to reports, the sister-duo, identified as Sasmita Giri and Purnima Giri, reached the spot on hearing screams, but by then the boat had capsized completely.
While a portion of the river is crocodile-infested, the two brave girls risked their lives and managed to save around ten persons, including two women and some children.
Hailing the duo’s valour, the Odisha CM said, “They are the real heroes of Odisha and represent the bravery and compassion of young Odisha.”
Notably, ten persons, including eight children, drowned when the country boat they had boarded capsized in Mahanadi River confluence near Nipania village in Kendrapara district on Wednesday evening.
Reportedly, the boat was ferrying picnickers hailing from Kujang area in Paradip. The group was returning from Hukitola Lighthouse after a picnic at around 7 pm when the tragedy struck them.
Expressing his grief over the boat tragedy, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakhs to the deceased persons next of kin and free treatment to the injured.
