Malkangiri: A junior clerk and his aide were arrested by a special team of Malkangiri police today for allegedly impersonating themselves as Maoists and demanding extortion from a supervisor of Motu Tehsil office in the district.
The accused were identified as Keshab Khilla (48), of Post office line under Korukonda PS and Rama Chandra Majhi (32), of Pujarimunda village under Pandripani PS.
Police said, the duo identifying themselves as Maoists had demanded Rs 5 lakh from one Kondapalli Chinna Rao of Hi-Tech colony and had also threatened to kill him and his family, if he fails to pay the ransom.
Acting on a complaint filed by Rao on October 16, a trap was laid and the duo was nabbed red-handed while receiving the ransom amount in a secluded place near a hill in between Korukonda-Kambeda this morning.
According to police, the extortion bid mastermind Khilla, who is working as junior clerk at Khairput Tahasil office had engaged accused Majhi, by giving him a new mobile phone and the telephone number of the complainant.
A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against the accused persons for repeatedly threatening the complainant over phone in a bid to extort Rs 5 lakh from him, the police said, and added that the duo will be produced before the Court of Malkangiri SDJM.
