JE outbreak: Admin raids to check Ban Chakunda adulteration in pulses

Malkangiri : Malkangiri District Administration on Tuesday cracked down on godowns, shops to inspect adulteration in pulses on the wake of recent claims on death toll due to consumption of Ban Chakunda seeds.

A team led by Sub Collector Birendra Karkar,  comprising ACSO Manoj Pradhan, Tehsildar Pita Kumar raided many godowns markets places and checked the quality of pulses to find whether they are adulterated with Bad Chakunda seeds. As many as seven blocks were raided following the instruction from the district collector.

It is noteworthy to mention here that earlier on November 18, child expert Jacob John during a visit of a central team to inspect JE outbreak claimed that laboratory tests of the blood from JE inflicted kids showed that most deaths have occurred not only due to the dreaded disease but also owing to poisoning caused by consumption of raw Ban Chakunda (Cassia Occidentalis) seeds.

Anthraquinone, a toxin found in the plant is responsible for a severe brain ailment and fever which is very fatal. The condition is known as Encephalopathy. Reports regarding the presence of the toxin in the blood samples of the JE afflicted kids were confirmed by laboratory check-ups at Indian Institute of Toxicology Research.

Earlier the administration had issued a ban against consumption of Ban Chakunda seeds but after reports of poisoning, it has been on a high alert.

Till now, more than hundred kids have succumbed to the fatal JE outbreak.
